The Grange Care Centre is our dedicated residential nursing facility located in the tranquil village of Stanford in the Vale, near Faringdon. As with all Forest Healthcare centres, the Activities Coordinator, care professionals, and Manager ensure every resident enjoys a varied, enriching calendar of events and activities tailored to their preferences and hobbies.
It is impossible to overstate the value of fulfilling and ever-changing events within residential care, whether visiting performers, artists or musicians join us for evenings of entertainment, or our care teams arrange seasonal trips and activities that ensure no two days are the same.
In recognition of the tireless work of our coordinators across Forest Healthcare, we asked The Grange team to share a snapshot of some of the many special occasions they have organised to challenge misconceptions about what life in a nursing centre is really like.
Celebrating Wildlife and Nature at The Grange Care Centre
Animals often bring great comfort and reassurance to our care centre residents, many of whom have stories to share about their own much-loved pets or childhood companions, alongside being able to help care for and cuddle the centre’s very own bunny, Philbert, who is also an escape artist!
During the warmer months, our semi-rural location often sees muntjac wandering into the gardens, while wild birds and squirrels are regular visitors.
With this in mind and recognising how much residents love watching for native species and spotting birds flitting between the bushes and trees, we invited everyone to make their own bird feeders to support the local ecosystem, creating seed-studded hanging displays.
Later in the year, we wanted to mark World Bee Day and, with the help of some residents, created a beautiful, quiet Bee Bar in the gardens, using recycled bottle caps to make small bee water bowls.
In wildlife activities outside of the centre, Lifestyle Assistant Julie is a passionate horse owner, and was generous enough to welcome residents and staff to her family farm. We met Puk the pony, saw the sheep and lambs, enjoyed a walk or ride over the fields, and headed to the Fox and Hounds for a warming lunch before heading home.
Having seen how much pleasure the farm visit evoked, we then organised a visit to Studley Butterfly Farm, which includes a garden centre, mini farm, and zoo, and a sun-soaked picnic that made a quiet summer’s day a truly fantastic outing for all.
How The Grange Care Team Marked Occasions and Events Throughout the Year
There are countless events that might be relevant to our centre residents, from religious days of worship and remembrance to annual events like St George’s Day. Each is an opportunity to celebrate our differences and create exciting menus or activities that everyone can engage with.
During 2025, there were more events than we could mention, but some of our highlights included:
- A Wimbledon Garden Party, complete with chair-based tennis, Pimm’s, strawberries and cream, with relatives and loved ones encouraged to join in with the fun.
- Pumpkin carving and spooky decorations for Halloween, with the pumpkins later repurposed to help feed our hungry squirrel visitors.
- Attending the village festival, browsing stalls and crafts, entering the raffle and tombola, and trying some delicious treats, while some residents decided to try a hand at archery!
- Making pancakes for Shrove Tuesday, with everyone able to pick and choose their own favourite toppings and fillings.
- Marking VE Day, with some amazing cakes, sandwiches, Union Jack themed decorations and cupcakes all created by our in-house team and caterers.
- Heading to Badbury Woods in April during the early days of spring to see the carpets of bluebells, before stopping in at the Radnor Arms for a nourishing lunch after a morning of fresh air.
Alongside group activities, from Bonfire Night sparklers to a competitive afternoon at the Hollywood Bowl, we also had some celebrations of our own. We were delighted to be named a Top 20 Care Home in South East England at the Carehome.co.uk awards, shortly followed by a heartwarming personal celebration for resident Edward, who marked his 60th wedding anniversary.
Day Trips and Family Adventures Aboard the Myley Bus
Remaining active in the community and maintaining friendships and traditions are enormously important to all at The Grange Care Centre, and we’re fortunate to rely on dedicated driver Sarah and the Myley Bus, which is available for group and individual trips and days out.
In July, Sarah arranged a morning visit to the riverside to feed the ducks, see a paddleboarding demonstration, and watch boats and canoes drift past, followed by an afternoon excursion to the local beer garden for a relaxed social chat.
Festivities and Christmas Celebrations at The Grange
Over the last month or so, we’ve hosted several activities, all centred around the magic of Christmas. They included a visit to the Appleton Christmas Barn, which is packed with trees and décor, and has some friendly reindeer in the barn.
Resident Jenny’s family organised a brilliant surprise, joining her and driver Sarah to see the spectacular Christmas displays at Chiltern Garden Centre, followed by a visit to the local pub for a relaxing refreshment and a chance to reminisce.
During the run-up to the Christmas break, The Grange itself was also full of festive cheer, with a wonderful visit from children from Stanford in the Vale Primary School who put on an incredible carol service that brought great joy. We put up a stunning Christmas tree and decorations, and ensured everyone enjoyed a tasty Christmas dinner on the big day.
