Continence Care

Continence care services involve the assessment of individuals to determine their needs, followed by the creation of a long-term care plan which may involve placement in a residential care facility. Incontinence is very common among the elderly population, particularly in those with Alzheimer’s or similar conditions, and can be treated in a variety of ways.

What is continence care?

This broad service category provides treatment to people suffering from urinary or faecal incontinence, whether it be due to age, mental or physical disability, or pregnancy.

Every individual who requires continence care services will first receive an assessment which will then lead to the formulation of an ongoing care plan. This plan details the bowel and bladder symptoms experienced by the individual, and the conditions which are causing these symptoms, in order to put together a comprehensive plan of action.

Continence care patients should receive instructions and assistance from trained professionals on bladder training or pelvic floor muscle training when applicable. In cases of persistent urinary incontinence, patients will be referred to specialists who can assess whether surgical options are appropriate in their case.

Depending on the circumstances, patients will receive treatment and then return home or they will receive on-going treatment and support in a care centre.

Contact us at Forest Healthcare to discuss whether this level of care and support is appropriate and find out how to begin the process. Our staff can help with the various options available and talk more about the services we provide.

What does a continence nurse do?

A continence nurse is responsible for many of the general, non-specialist services provided to an individual suffering from incontinence. This nurse will be there for the initial assessment, ensuring that the patient is treated with compassion during the process and attempting to lessen the embarrassment that can be associated with it.

From that point on, nurses are trained to not only help alleviate the symptoms of incontinence but also to make referrals to specialists when required. This may include physiotherapists, urologists, urogynaecologists, and colorectal surgeons depending on patient history and current needs.

Continence care staff are also responsible for providing clear explanations to patients and their caregivers on any issues that they may have, as well as giving advice on applicable products or devices. This process also involves helping patients and caregivers understand any further treatment options or long-term services that would be appropriate in their situation.

What does continence care involve?

Before care can begin, individuals will usually be asked to keep track of their bladder or bowel activities and write down the details for a minimum of 3 days. This will be followed by an assessment as mentioned above.

The next steps taken will depend on the severity of the condition. If the incontinence can be treated by various training methods, medication, or surgery, there will be no need to use incontinence products on a daily basis.

If these methods do not show positive results, or they are not applicable in a given situation, the patient will be shown and instructed how to use various incontinence products.
